Madonna's Dead Sea choice

Madonna is "hooked" on an age-defying Israeli skincare product. The 48-year-old singer, famed for constantly reinventing her image, was thrilled when her Kabala mentor Karen Berg told her about a "rejuvenating" product which helps keep lines and wrinkles at bay.

A source told Britain's Daily Express newspaper: "The product uses natural salts and minerals from the Dead Sea and claims to have extraordinary rejuvenating powers. Madonna is hooked. She has started using these products on her face morning and night, and all over her body. "She could clearly afford to buy far more top of the range creams but it's the Israeli ingredients that have her hooked." Antioxidants have been receiving a lot of attention in the media recently for the role they play in a number of body functions, including providing protection against signs of aging. Anti-aging and Alkaline Diet

Mr. Sang Whang is a successful inventor, scientist, and engineer. He explains the health and antiaging processes in layman terms in his book, Reverse Aging. Below is an excerpt from that book. INTRODUCTION In order to learn how to get younger, we must understand the process of antiaging and an alkaline diet. Handling natural health improvement devices developed in Japan a few years, I have witnessed as well as personally experienced many mysterious phenomenon in the reverse aging effect. Being a scientist, engineer, and inventor, I have tried to understand and explain the phenomenon scientifically, applying the scientific principles of those non-drug, natural health improvement devices. During the course of the study, I came to a realization of what the human aging process is about. The great news is that, with this new theory, the antiaging process can be explained, and ANYBODY CAN GET YOUNGER IF HE OR SHE SO DESIRES. THE AGING PROCESS We get old because we are not disposing of all the internally generated wastes and toxins, and accumulate the leftovers within our body. For our body to function and to maintain body temperature, we burn nutrients within our cells. The main ingredients of all foods, expensive or inexpensive, gourmet or junk, vegetable or meat, alkaline or acid, are either carbohydrates, proteins or fats. And they are nothing but the combinations of four elements: carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen. After these nutrients are burnt (oxidized) in the cells, they all turn into organic acids: carbonic acids, uric acids, lactic acids, fatty acids, ammonia, etc. Fats are acidic even before oxidation. The Chinese word for oxygen is written with two characters, "sahn-so". They literally mean "acid root". These acidic wastes and toxins are disposed out of the body in liquid form, as urine or perspiration, after first being dissolved into the blood. Every element within our body was place there by the blood and can come out of there by first being dissolved into the blood and then being carried out. If anyone loses ten pounds by any dietary means, it can be said that most of that ten pounds came out through the urine. Unfortunately, due to our life styles and environments (i.e., too much ingestion, overwork, over indulgence, not enough rest, staying up late, not enough exercise, inadequate water consumption, smoking, pollution, low alkaline diet etc.) the body cannot get rid of all the acidic waste products that it generates within. We accumulate these left over waste products somewhere within our body. This is the process of getting old. To make matters worse, mixed with these organic acids are inorganic acid minerals such as chlorine, phosphor, and sulfur that come in with most of our acidic foods: meats, grains and root crops. We don't eat enough of alkaline diet (antiaging) foods such as fruits and vegetables that contain inorganic alkaline minerals: calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, etc. Although the amounts of inorganic minerals are small compared with the organic acid wastes that the body produces, they contribute more towards the acid side. However, one important thing to note is that even if one does not eat any acidic food at all, as long as carbohydrates and proteins are consumed, the body produces much more acidic wastes than the inorganic alkaline minerals can counteract. We are born with high alkaline blood pH of 7.44. As we get older, the blood pH drops down to 7.35 or below. The blood pH referred to here is the artery blood pH. The difference of 0.09 in pH value seems very small but since pH is logarithmic, the amount of hydroxyl ion (OH-) in 7.44 pH is 1.23 times that of 7.35 pH, because 10=1.2303. The hydroxyl ion is an oxygen donor while the hydrogen ion (H+) is an oxygen taker. In other words, young people carry 23% more of the oxygen donors in their blood than older people. No wonder they are more energetic. Uric acid is nearly insoluble in water, alcohol, and ether, but soluble in solutions of alkaline salts. In other words, it becomes soluble in alkaline water. Arthritis and gout are caused by uric acid deposited between the joints, non-dissolved due to the low alkalinity of an older person's blood. Drinking acid free alkaline water will gradually elevate one's blood pH and the gout will disappear naturally. (More about this acid free alkaline water later) As we live with poor waste disposal systems for a long period of time, some parts of our body build up more acids than others, and they can clog up capillary vessels around those acidic areas. This causes some body organs to function in a sluggish manner. We feel tired and run down sometimes for no reason whatsoever, and adult diseases such as high blood pressure, arthritis, diabetes, asthma, allergies, etc. start to set in WE SIMPLY ACCEPT THESE PHENOMENA AS "GETTING OLD." Alkaline Diet In some extreme cases, the build up of acidic elements are so great that it starts to destroy healthy cells around them. Healthy cells must maintain a slightly alkaline pH level. Some cells change their formula in order to survive in an acidic environment. If they are successful, this is the beginning of cancer. Cancer cells are acidic while healthy cells are alkaline. Even if the cancerous tumors are completely removed surgically, as long as the acidic conditions in the area remain, the chances are that new tumors will develop around the same area. Exactly where the left over waste products are accumulated may very according to every individual. However, the parts of the body where wastes accumulate first may determine what kind of adult disease that individual may develop first. Within one family, the storage places may be similar. This may explain the hereditary effects of certain adult diseases. THE ANTIAGING PROCESS Because the accumulation of waste products inside the body is the aging process, helping the body to get rid of the OLD waste products is the antiaging process. This reverse aging process takes two steps. The first step is to develop a good disposal system and the second step is to pull out the old wastes from their hiding places. Development of A Good Disposal System Since, as mentioned before, the waste disposal is done in liquid form by urine and perspiration, it is imperative that we drink plenty of water, When one is going through any diet program, doctors tell him to drink 8 glasses of water a day. They know the disposal is through urine, but they don't tell you what kind of water to drink. Since all waste products are acidic, the best kind of water is acid free alkaline water. Drinking 4 glasses of this alkaline water is much more effective than 8 glasses of regular, bottled water or filtered tap water. There are devices called water ionizers that split alkaline minerals and acid minerals in regular tap water by electrical means. A quality water ionizer takes in regular tap water which has both acid and alkaline minerals in it and has a typical pH value of 7. The system then releases water with a pH value of 9 or higher with all the alkaline minerals from the original tap water. At the same time it releases acidic water with a pH value of 5 or lower with all the acid minerals in the original tap water. Since this alkaline water has twice as many alkaline minerals as the original water but NO acid minerals, it is more than twice as potent as the original water. Inside our body, it will neutralize only acidic elements and discharge them safely out of the body. Drinking 8 glasses of regular water can leach out acidic wastes as well as some valuable alkaline minerals such as potassium. That's why doctors test your blood when you are going through a serious diet program. With this alkaline water there is no worry about losing potassium from your system.

Vitamins & Minerals

Everybody needs the nutrition of vitamins and minerals to work, grow, and develop properly, which makes them extremely important on a daily basis. But it doesn't stop there. The human body also requires nutrition to do many things, such as ward off disease, boost immune system response, and even improve overall moods! When the skin gets a cut, the human body needs nutrition to clot. When one gets sick, the body requires a more than average amount of nutrition to help fight the virus. Most people don't realize just how extremely critical nutrition is. For example, nutrition regulates reactions that occur in metabolism, unlike other dietary components known as macronutrients (fats, carbohydrates, proteins). One can consume all the right amounts of these fats, carbohydrates, and proteins, get all the exercise needed, but unless there are also very adequate amounts of nutrition in the body to regulate how these macronutrients are used, benefits achieved will be slim to none! Absence of just a single vitamin blocks one or more specific metabolic reactions in a cell and eventually may disrupt the metabolic balance within a cell and in our entire body. With the exception of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), all of the water-soluble vitamins assist enzymes that function in energy transfer/ metabolism of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. In other words, it is extremely difficult for our bodies to break down these nutrients into energy we can use without vitamins. As we age our body’s requirement for nutrition changes, supplementation is an excellent way to ensure we have an excess of reserves for our systems to work well at an optimal level of performance.

Beta Carotene:

In the last few years increasing numbers of reports have suggested that the use of Beta Carotene may act to prevent the development of various malignancies. Beta Carotene and other similar compounds have differentiating properties that appear to affect cell growth and maturation. Beta Carotene is not toxic to the liver even in high doses in contrast to Vitamin A. Large doses of Beta Carotene will increase the body's demands for Vitamin E; therefore, those of you on 50,000 to 100,000 units of beta carotene per day will need to also increase your vitamin E to 1,000 to 2,000 units per day. The definitive role of beta carotene/vitamin E is yet to be understood, but there is sufficient reason to use beta carotene in a dose of 50,000 units per day. There is no need to supplement this with carrot juice or vitamin A. Beta carotene, like vitamin A and E is stored in the liver. Current clinical trials in prevention of cervix cancer and cancer of the lung and breast are using beta carotene. This may also be helpful in the prevention of colon cancer and melanoma. VITAMIN E: Please read the above. Vitamin E is an important anti-oxidant. It acts as a free radical scavenger to prevent the byproducts of chemical-cell interaction to cause cell damage. Free radicals are likely responsible for all or most of the degenerative diseases e.g. arthritis, heart disease, cancer, senility etc. The absorption or scavenging of free radicals would protect our cells from this type of injury. Other free radical scavengers include zinc, vitamin C, and selenium. Studies have reported vitamin E to protect against some of the toxicities of ionizing radiation. Vitamin E may help to decrease the toxicity of certain chemotherapy drugs. Adriamycin is an important anti-cancer drug with potential major toxicity to the heart. The use of 1000 to 2,000 units of vitamin E per day may help to decrease this toxicity. Vitamin E may decrease some of the harmful effects of solar radiation on the skin. As cited above it works well in conjunction with beta carotene. Vitamin E appears to have stabilizing effect on the vascular system and is useful in decreasing menopausal and premenstrual symptoms. It is useful in decreasing leg cramps occurring especially at night. Vitamin E can be used in lotions or creams to protect the skin or to treat for burns. It is also helpful to treat burns secondary to radiation therapy. I have also used it with good results in patients with dermatitis resulting from poor blood circulation i.e. stasis dermatitis. It is commonly prescribed for topical use in pregnant women to prevent stretch marks on the abdomen. More recently it has been used to prevent or treat mucositis resulting from chemotherapy. I advise patients to bite into a 1000 unit capsule and swish the vitamin E around the mouth and over the mucous membranes lining the cheeks. This is done three to four times a day. You can also use liquid vitamin E to do this.

B COMPLEX:

The B complexes are important membrane stabilizers. They are natural tranquilizers or anti-stress vitamins because of this property. They are important vitamins to help nerve function. The B complex vitamins contain PABA which is important in protecting the skin against the harmful effects of Ultra-violet radiation. PABA is an excellent UV screening agent and helps to protect against the development of skin cancer or sun-induced skin damage e.g. wrinkling and solar keratoses. Fair complexioned people should avoid sun exposure and should use sun- blockers with at least a 15 factor as well as use B complex orally. Such people are actinic or sun sensitive and are at a greater risk for the development of skin cancers of all types. People with red hair, blue or green eyes tend to be sun sensitive (actinic sensitive). Women using oral contraceptives increase their utilization of the B vitamins and need to supplement their diet with B complex. Patient under high stress should do the same. The B vitamins are water soluble. They are not stored in the body as are beta carotene and vitamin E. B complex must be taken with food already in the stomach. If taken on an empty stomach, pain and nausea are not uncommon. The use of B complex in a dose of 100 mg once to three times a day with meals is recommended per patient tolerance. If the B complex is being absorbed the urine will be bright yellow and have a pungent smell due to the riboflavonoids present. This is to be expected and should not cause alarm. If no change in urine color is noted then suspect that your brand of B complex is not being absorbed by your body- change brands. VITAMIN C: This vitamin is important for tissue healing. Patients with peptic ulcers will heal faster on vitamin C than those without extra vitamin C. As mentioned previously, vitamin C is an anti-oxidant. It is also water soluble as B complex. I advise that it be used in doses of 2,000 to 6,000 mg after each meal to take advantage of its anti-oxidant effects. I would start with 1,000 mg after each meal and increase slowly up to 6,000 mg after each meal. Side-effects of large doses include diarrhea and flatulence. Studies in Canada show a decrease number of colon polyps in patients taking high doses of vitamin C. Such polyps are precursors for colon cancer. If we can decrease polyp formation with vitamin C perhaps we can decrease colon cancer as well. The use of vitamin C in this capacity should accompany a very low fat diet that is high in dietary fiber. Smoking and alcohol consumption will increase the excretion of vitamin C. Alcohol will actually deplete all of the water soluble vitamins. Vitamin C has been touted by Pauling and Cameron to decrease cancer growth and cause remissions in cancer patients. I have not seen any evidence in all of the studies published to warrant that conclusion. The studies published by Pauling and Cameron were scientifically unsound and poorly controlled. Major trials using high dose I.V. vitamin C fail to confirm any anti- cancer effect of this vitamin in patients with established cancer. High dose vitamin C may be a problem in patients with a tendency to kidney stone formation. Check with your physician if this is your situation. In patients receiving iron supplements to help treat iron deficiency, the use of vitamin C taken at the same time as the iron medicine will greatly enhance the absorption of iron. Vitamin C will help with wound healing and healing of burns. It improves the strength of the walls of the blood vessels and may help decrease the easy bruising seen with some patients. Vitamin C in topical form to prevent sunburn and to absorb the ultraviolet rays will soon be available. Vitamin C may help people with low back pain and arthritis due to its anti- oxidant effects. This and other vitamins need to be taken over long periods of time. These substances work over time -- be patient.

SELENIUM:

This is an anti-oxidant with activity as a free radical scavenger. Populations with high blood selenium levels are found to have lower death rates due to cancer. Mormons have high selenium blood levels perhaps related to their diet. Cancer patients have low selenium blood levels. Selenium works in harmony with vitamin E. Selenium toxicity can occur and the dose of selenium should be close to 100 MICROGRAMS (not milligrams) per day.

CALCIUM-MAGNESIUM:

Calcium is deficient in most of our diets. This deficiency is most prevalent in women who have had children and have never supplemented their own diets with calcium. Calcium consumption along with exercise is the best means to prevent calcium deficiency. Once calcium is lost and signs of osteopenia develop the medical problem may be hard to reverse. Collapse of bone and fractures commonly of the pelvis may occur in such individuals. When people "shrink" with age it is due to vertebral compression fractures caused by osteopenia, commonly referred to as osteoporosis. Bone density studies will detect patients having osteopenia. Calcium, like B complex acts as a membrane stabilizer and natural tranquilizer as does magnesium and potassium. Calcium and magnesium should be taken together in a ratio of 2:1. A daily intake of Calcium of 1,000 to 1,500 mg is reasonable. Calcium/magnesium may be taken at bedtime to promote sleep. Magnesium in the form of magnesium oxide in combination with vitamin B-6 has been shown to dissolve certain types of kidney stones (calcium oxalate stones). This preparation is called Beelith and is taken twice a day. It is also helpful in patients with chronic constipation since magnesium salts act as cathartics. During pregnancy the intake of calcium and magnesium should be increased to prevent deficiency in mother and child. Patients with potassium deficiency should always be checked for magnesium deficiency. In the presence of magnesium depletion, it is very difficult to replete potassium stores. I have used a calcium citrate source containing vitamin D to enhance calcium absorption. This is an effervescent formulation and it is taken as two tablets dissolved in a glass of cold water per day. Calcium citrate is better absorbed and utilized than calcium carbonate. The use of fluoride in a liquid formulation (potassium fluoride 180 mg/cc) help bind calcium in the bones. Fluoride drops are taken as 1 drop in juice or water three times per day. This is a prescription item and must be made up by the pharmacist. The dose can be slowly increased per the physician. Fluoride in this concentration can irritate the gastric lining. Slow increases in dose are important to prevent this side-effect.

ZINC:

This element is important in wound healing. It also functions as an anti- oxidant. It is helpful in the treatment of acne. It hastens healing of peptic ulcer disease and burns. The recommended dose is 100 mg per day. Chelated zinc will not cause the gastrointestinal distress the inorganic zinc will. Therefore, request a chelated zinc rather than zinc sulfate.

The skin is the largest organ in the human body. Each day many thousands of skin cells are shed from the outermost layer and continually replaced by rapidly dividing cells from the skin layers underneath. Due to their short lifespan and rapid growth rate, developing skin cells require a steady supply of specific nutrients, fed to them from the bloodstream, to remain and look healthy from one generation of cells to the next.

It is a simple fact that radiant, more youthful skin demands proper external care plus adequate vitamin and minerals intake to provide nourishment to developing skin cells. Optimal consumption of nutrients is an essential, but often overlooked, step in enhancing the texture and beauty of the skin. In the past few years, studies have revealed the optimal doses of various compounds required to help the body manufacture the smoothest, softest and most radiant skin, as well as minimize the formation of wrinkles and slow other characteristics of skin aging. Antioxidant Nutrients Ingestion of antioxidant vitamins and minerals from supplements has been shown to protect skin cells from free-radical damage induced by overexposure to ultraviolet light and various harmful environmental chemicals. In particular, free-radical damage from excessive UV overexposure can cause aging and wrinkling of the skin, as well as other forms of skin damage.
