The Oprah Hoodia Connection
Oprah’s opinion is highly valued when it comes to diet pills. Products mentioned by Oprah become over night best sellers. Oprah’s connection to Hoodia proves this, as it was the initial spark which ignited the dieting dynamite of Hoodia Gordonii. Hoodia Gordonii is a miracle plant that seems to be a strong appetite suppressant helping people lose weight by eliminating hunger. The Hoodia-Oprah connection was formed in July of 2005, in a story in “O” Magazine called “Diet Pills, The Next Generation”. Real Hoodia is still in strong demand because of it's initial mention in Oprah Winfrey's magazine, followed by many notable news agencies' broadcasts of it's amazing effects. In fact, few people have bad things to say about Hoodia. The most common issue seems to be an influx of imitation Hoodia products to the market, which is why it's important to verify a vendor's CITES documentation before purchasing. As found on the Internet there are a lot of searches for Oprah Hoodia. There is in fact, no product with this name. Other people claim that Oprah is using hoodia herself and as far as we can tell this is NOT a fact either. Oprah has been battling her weight for quite some time. She, like many other Americans will lose weight and then gain it back. Regarding Hoodia, Oprah’s report may be correct. Current research and customer’s statements appear to indicate that Hoodia works for thousands of people. Like most products, it wont work for everyone, but the overall sentiment about the product is that it is very successful. The article in Oprah did not support any brand of the weight loss supplement specifically. It was a basic article, as were the reports on the TV show about the effectiveness of hoodia as an appetite suppressant. The investigative reports that have been released by reporters actually traveling to South Africa and eating raw hoodia in the wild have sparked a nation-wide demand that is truly amazing.

Hoodia
This page is dedicated to some succulents of the Asclepiad family. There are about 2,000 species of Ascleoiadaceae split into some 300 genera, of which, about half are succulents. According to The British Cactus and Succulent Society Handbook of Shows (1991), Hoodia, Pseudolithos and Trichocaulon are all members of the Trichocaulon subgroup.
See page of Jakob Baran who grows them in Israel very successfully.
Also see page Garden & Nurseries for nurseries in Israel specializing in growing Hoodias.
Hoodia are natives to the semi-deserts of S. Africa and Namibia.
There are about 20 species in this family. The plant form a clump of short, upright stem in pale green. These plants are very difficult to grow and need a lot of attention and control of watering, temperature and sunlight.
The H. gordonii has become lately in the spot light of a public interest as a supplement for diet by suppressing hunger and thirst.
Hoodia: The most talked about diet product on Oprah, 60 minutes, the Today show...
South African Hoodia Gordonii is an appetite suppressant with no unhealthy side effects! A 60 minutes crew member who travelled to South Africa to test hoodia locally, noted that she had no funny taste in her mouth, no queasy stomach, and no racing heart, compared to other diet products.
You can take pure hoodia extract as a supplement and it works like a diet pill, but most importantly, Optimum Hoodia is 100% pure all organic material from the Kalahari Desert's Kooroo Region in South Africa. Why take Optimum Hoodia over other brands? Optimum Hoodia is not only the STRONGEST tablet per MG formula on the market (1000 mg) , it's also the only Sustained Release Tablet!
Independently Tested and Certified
Hoodia gordonii is a cactus-like plant (succulent) that is actually a member of the milkweed family. It only grows wild in the Kooroo Region of the Kalahari Desert. The San Bushmen of the South AfricanKalahari have been using Hoodia for thousands of years to stave off hunger during hunting journies There are several other similar products available such as H57 and 911 Hoodia, but all hoodia sold by Optimum Hoodia is independently tested and verified to be 100% hoodia gordonii. Every batch of hoodia sent from South Africa goes to testing labs for rigorous state of the art tests to verify its purity.
Create your own success story
While everyone’s story and results are different, the overall message is the same. Optimum Hoodia gives you control over your hunger by helping you to eat less. It's worked for thousands of others. It can work for you too.
Medical Success:
It took the South African national laboratory 3 decades years to isolate and determine the specific appetite-suppressing ingredient in hoodia. Richard M. Goldfarb, MD, a doctor and medical director of Bucks County Clinical Research in Morrisville, Pa., conducted a preliminary study of Hoodia gordonii on people and found it effective in supressing the appetite. The seven overweight participants' starting weights ranged from 193 to 345 pounds. Goldfarb notes that they lost, on average, 3.3% of their body weight. The median loss over the 28-day study was 10 pounds.* If you are looking to lose weight and control cravings, hoodia may be the solution for you.
How does Hoodia work?
Hoodia contains an organic chemical which is called 'P57'. By using Hoodia, your brain is fooled into thinking that you are full. You will still need to eat small, balanced meals of course, but you will become full more quickly. Hoodia will allow to you eat less and eliminate cravings.
"Hoodia gordonii works within the satiety center of the brain by releasing a chemical compound similar to glucose but up to 100 times stronger," Goldfarb says in his written report. "The hypothalamus receives this signal as an indication that enough food has been consumed and this in turn decreases the appetite." **.
Do not take Hoodia without first talking to your doctor if you
have diabetes or if you are taking a medicine to control your blood sugar levels,
have any heart problems or take any heart medicines,
have a bleeding or blood clotting disorder or are taking a medicine to increase or decrease the clotting of your blood such as aspirin, warfarin (Coumadin), or heparin,
have anorexia, bulimia or any other eating disorder.
You may not be able to take Hoodia, or you may require special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions or are taking any of the medicines listed above.
Hoodia has not been evaluated by the FDA for safety, effectiveness, or purity. All potential risks and/ or advantages of Hoodia may not be known. Additionally, there are no regulated manufacturing standards in place for these compounds. There have been instances where herbal/ health supplements have been sold which were contaminated with toxic metals or other drugs. Herbal/ health supplements should be purchased from a reliable source to minimize the risk of contamination.
What is Hoodia?
Hoodia gordonii is a cactus-like succulent plant, native to the Kalahari Desert in Southern Africa.
Hoodia has received a lot of publicity in recent times for its natural appetite suppressant properties.
How does Hoodia work?
The appetite suppressant effects of Hoodia were first observed in 1937 by a Dutch anthropologist studying the primitive San Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert.
It was noticed that the nomadic Bushmen, (who call it Xhoba) ate the stem of the Hoodia plant to stave off hunger during long hunting trips in the sparsely vegetated area.
The active ingredient in Hoodia is the appetite-suppressing molecule, P57, which is licensed to the British pharmaceutical company Phytopharm who are researching its potential as an anti-obesity drug.
Scientists from Phytopharm say P57 acts on the brain in a manner similar to glucose. It tricks the brain into thinking you are full even when you have not eaten, reduces interest in food and delays the time before hunger sets in.
Who should not take Hoodia?
Do not take Hoodia without first talking to your doctor if you have
diabetes,
heart disease or high blood pressure,
a bleeding or blood clotting disorder,
anorexia, bulimia or any other eating disorder.
Talk to your doctor before taking Hoodia if you have any other medical conditions, allergies (especially to plants), or if you take other medicines or herbal/ health supplements.
Do not take Hoodia without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant.
Do not take Hoodia without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
There is no information available regarding the use of Hoodia by children. Do not give any herbal/ health supplement to a child without first talking to the child's doctor.
How should I take Hoodia?
The use of Hoodia in cultural and traditional settings may differ from concepts accepted by current Western medicine. When considering the use of herbal supplements, consultation with a primary health care professional is advisable. Additionally, consultation with a practitioner trained in the uses of herbal/ health supplements may be beneficial, and coordination of treatment among all health care providers involved may be advantageous.
Take Hoodia as directed on the package or as directed by your doctor, pharmacist, or other health care provider.
Store Hoodia as directed on the package.
What happens if I miss a dose?
No information is available regarding a missed dose of Hoodia. Consult your doctor, pharmacist, or health care provider if you require further information.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention.
What should I avoid while taking Hoodia?
There are no known restrictions on food, beverages, or activity while taking Hoodia, unless otherwise directed by your health care provider.
What are the possible side effects of Hoodia?
Hoodia is not a stimulant, and has no known side effects.
Hoodia appears to be safe for most people although further scientific studies are required to establish the safety profile of Hoodia extract.
Talk to your doctor about any side effect that you develop.
What other drugs will affect Hoodia?
While there are no known interactions between Hoodia and other medicines, it is recommended you talk to your doctor, pharmacist, or health care provider before taking any prescription or over-the-counter medicines or other herbal/ health supplements.

Imagine this: an organic pill that kills the appetite and attacks obesity.
It has no known side-effects, and contains a molecule that fools your brain into believing you are full.
Deep inside the African Kalahari desert, grows an ugly cactus-like plant called the Hoodia. It thrives in extremely high temperatures, and takes years to mature.
The San Bushmen of the Kalahari, one of the world's oldest and most primitive tribes, had been eating the Hoodia for thousands of years, to stave off hunger during long hunting trips.
When South African scientists were routinely testing it, they discovered the plant contained a previously unknown molecule, which has since been christened P 57.
The license was sold to a Cambridgeshire bio-pharmaceutical company, Phytopharm, who in turn sold the development and marketing rights to the giant Pfizer Corporation.
Fortune cactus
A molecule in the cactus makes you feel full
When I travelled to the Kalahari, I met families of the San bushmen.
It is a sad, impoverished and displaced tribe, still unaware they are sitting on top of a goldmine.
But if the Hoodia works, the 100,000 San strung along the edge of the Kalahari will become overnight millionaires on royalties negotiated by their South African lawyer Roger Chennells.
And they will need all the help they can to secure the money.
Currently, many bushmen smoke large quantities of marijuana, suffer from alcoholism, and have neither possessions nor any sense of the value of money.
The truth is no-one has fully grasped what the magic molecule means for their counterparts in the developed world.
Blood sugar
According to the British Heart Foundation 17% of men and 21% of women are obese, while 46% of men and 32% of women are overweight.
So the drug's marketing potential speaks for itself.
Phytopharm's Dr Richard Dixey explained how P.57 actually works:
"There is a part of your brain, the hypothalamus. Within that mid-brain there are nerve cells that sense glucose sugar.
"When you eat, blood sugar goes up because of the food, these cells start firing and now you are full.
"What the Hoodia seems to contain is a molecule that is about 10,000 times as active as glucose.
"It goes to the mid-brain and actually makes those nerve cells fire as if you were full. But you have not eaten. Nor do you want to."
Clinical trials
Dixey organised the first animal trials for Hoodia. Rats, a species that will eat literally anything, stopped eating completely.
When the first human clinical trial was conducted, a morbidly obese group of people were placed in a "phase 1 unit", a place as close to prison as it gets.
All the volunteers could do all day was read papers, watch television, and eat.
Half were given Hoodia, half placebo. Fifteen days later, the Hoodia group had reduced their calorie intake by 1000 a day.
It was a stunning success.
The cactus test
In order to see for ourselves, we drove into the desert, four hours north of Capetown in search of the cactus.
Once there, we found an unattractive plant which sprouts about 10 tentacles, and is the size of a long cucumber.
Each tentacle is covered in spikes which need to be carefully peeled.
The San will finally throw off thousands of years of oppression, poverty, social isolation and discrimination
Inside is a slightly unpleasant-tasting, fleshy plant.
At about 1800hrs I ate about half a banana size - and later so did my cameraman.
Soon after, we began the four hour drive back to Capetown.
The plant is said to have a feel-good almost aphrodisiac quality, and I have to say, we felt good.
But more significantly, we did not even think about food. Our brains really were telling us we were full. It was a magnificent deception.
Dinner time came and went. We reached our hotel at about midnight and went to bed without food. And the next day, neither of us wanted nor ate breakfast.
I ate lunch but without appetite and very little pleasure. Partial then full appetite returned slowly after 24 hours.
The future
Mr Chennells is ecstatic:
"The San will finally throw off thousands of years of oppression, poverty, social isolation and discrimination.
"We will create trust funds with their Hoodia royalties and the children will join South Africa's middle classes in our lifetime.
"I envisage Hoodia cafes in London and New York, salads will be served and the Hoodia cut like cucumber on to the salad.
"It will need flavouring to counter its unpleasant taste, but if it has no side effects and no cumulative side-effects."
Unfortunately for the overweight, Hoodia will not be around for several years, the clinical trials still have several years to run.
Do not travel to the Kalahari to steal the plant as it is hard to find and illegal to export.
And beware internet sites offering Hoodia "pills" from the US as we tested the leading brand and discovered it has no discernible Hoodia in it.
Does Hoodia Work or Is It a Scam?
We have all seen the name of hoodia being used by dietary supplements that proclaim to help lose weight everywhere and yet, we may find ourselves asking, “does hoodia work?” or that we may ask ourselves if it could bestow side effects on people who are using it. Being hyped as the breakthrough magical ingredient, the name “hoodia” is being put to multivitamins and even to the brand, Trimspa.
Does Hoodia Work or Is It a Scam?
Considering the effects of the other miracle pills like Ephedra and Phenfen has brought the public, the people have the right to be skeptical and cautious in considering using hoodia. Unlike the Ephedra and Phenfen, hoodia is not a stimulant which could then later lead to serious side effects such as hypertension and the inability to sleep.
Does hoodia work or was it all a media hype to just boost the sales of the branded dietary supplements? The truth is, hoodia was being used hundreds of years ago by the San Bushmen of South Africa during their hunting expeditions to help them refrain from eating and drinking since it helps in warding off hunger. When you eat and the compounds are broken, hoodia tricks the hypothalamus, a part of the brain that informs you if you are already full or not. The P57 is the main extract of the plant hoodia and is the main ingredient responsible for suppressing the appetite. So we may ask, “does hoodia work?” and the answer is plain yes since it has the active ingredient P57 to assist you on your weight loss, makes you physically make you feel that you have already eaten ample amount of food, and in turn, minimizes your yearning to eat.
It’s All About The Business
To think that, “does hoodia work or is it just a fad?” may be one of the questions that lingers in our minds when we are considering to use hoodia as the answer to our weight loss. And since most of the popular brands such as Trimspa, NV, SlimFast to name a few, it makes it more harder and confusing for us which dietary supplement product would work best and deliver the kind of results we all desire to achieve.
There are also a lot of health stores whether it is in the malls or online that proclaims that their hoodia dietary supplements are the best. They may not work well since they lack the ample amount of hoodia concentration. The best caution that we could take when we buy dietary supplements is to know if the product has enough hoodia (750 mg is said to be the ample amount to have the appetite suppressing effect of hoodia) and only contain the authentic hoodia gordonii plant extract.
Although Hoodia diet pills have really only been recognized over the past few years in particular, they have shot quickly into intense popularity, and for very good reason. After all, the Hoodia diet pills are now considered to be one of the most effective and fast-working weight loss products on the market today, and the fact that they do not have any known side effects certainly helps as well.
About The Hoodia Diet Pills
Even though the Hoodia diet pills have been proven as being completely safe, you still want to make sure that you are informed and understanding on them before you take them, just so that you are more aware on them in general and also so that you can feel safer.
The first step then is to learn about the main ingredient, the plant that has been the hot topic of all the discussion and controversy in regards to these sorts of products, and that is the Hoodia Gordonii plant. This plant, which resembles a cactus but in fact is not, grows naturally in the Northern Cape, which is a province located in South Africa.
The Hoodia Gordonii has long been known for its effects as an appetite suppressor, however only rather recently has it been taken seriously enough and put into such products as the Hoodia diet pills. Recent research has gone to show that the Hoodia Gordonii species actually contains a molecule which is similar to glucose, and so thus it basically works by tricking the brain into thinking you are full when you actually are not.
The Benefits
There are a number of different benefits that can be reaped from these Hoodia pills, namely that they are extremely fast-acting, and so you can notice results as soon as a few days even, depending on what your size is to begin with and how fast your metabolism works.
As well the pills have no known side-effects, and so, unlike most other weight loss products, you do not have to worry about any distressing or hurtful repercussions from taking the pills. They are not detoxifying, amphetamine or diuretic weight loss pills, but rather what they do is suppress your appetite, therefore simply stopping you from thinking about food, and thus reducing your caloric intake.
These pills really work wonders, and because there are no possible negative side effects, you can even start taking them without the advice of a medical professional, if you wish.
The Advantages of Hoodia Gordonii Softgels
Hoodia products are by far some of the most popular in terms of the weight loss market, and for very good reason. After all, the Hoodia Gordonii plant, which is the main – and often only – ingredient in these weight loss products is so incredibly powerful and fast-acting that every product has shown at least some form of results on every single user, regardless of how much trouble they have had in the past in terms of losing weight.
The Hoodia Gordonii Softgels
The Hoodia Gordonii softgels are especially popular, and this is because they are like the other Hoodia weight loss pills, only in softgel form, so that they are easier for you to take. The Hoodia Gordonii softgels have the same potency and powerfulness as the other pills however the softgel exterior keeps you from having that chalky pill taste in your mouth, and as well enhances the slow acting process of the Hoodia Gordonii softgels even more.
The Benefits
There are many benefits to the Hoodia Gordonii softgels over any other Hoodia product, and for one they are faster acting than most the other Hoodia products. After all, taking anything in tablet form is going to work faster than consuming it in other ways, for instance, and so when you take these Hoodia softgels you are going to start feeling results almost immediately.
How They Work
Basically the process which is involved here is quite simple – there is a certain molecule which is in the Hoodia Gordonii plant which is quite similar to glucose, and so when consumed by someone, it tricks the brain into thinking that the body is full when really you have not eaten at all.
Not only that, but it also acts as an appetite suppressant in between meals, so that you do not get as hungry as you usually would throughout the course of the day and thus you end up eating less and lowering your overall caloric intake.
Speaking to Your Doctor
Although the Hoodia plant and all of the Hoodia products are completely safe and have no dangerous side effects, you may still want to speak to your doctor first before you start on any of them, just so that you can be sure that this is something that would be recommended for you; for instance if your doctor thinks that you are at a healthy weight now then taking Hoodia products would not be such a great idea.

The Reality About the Hoodia Plant
There are many pills out there proclaiming that they are the “magic pill” that would help you lose weight easily, without the pain of exercise and the torment of suppressing your appetite. Sometimes, we may find ourselves confused especially when looking for a product that would finally help us manage our weight without any side effects.
There is a breakthrough in weight-loss and it is brought about by the plant called “hoodia” . The hoodia plant can only be found and only grows in the Kalahari desert, located in South Africa.
All About the Plant
The hoodia plant is part of the Apocynaceae flowering plant family which is connected under the subfamily of Asclepiadoideae. They are cactus-like and are stem-succulents but later found out that they are in no way related to the cactus family of plants. The hoodia plant emits a strong odor, grows large flowers and the plant is said to reach a height of up to one meter.
Most of the hoodia species are protected plants and the Bushmen of South Africa called the plant “xhoba” and was later introduced to the world as “hoodia”.
Popularity in Africa
The hoodia plant is considered to be as one of the indigenous food that is being eaten by South African Bushmen hundreds of years ago when they go on hunting. The Bushmen would mainly eat it to help ward off hunger and thirst during their expeditions. Other people in South Africa also use the plant to treat indigestion and other forms of small infections.
During the 1960s, the first test about the hoodia plant was conducted and was later found out that it helps suppress hunger and thirst resulting to decrease in animal body weight without any dangers or side effects. After a few years, it was when the South Africa’s CSIR or Council for Scientific and Industrial Research came to isolate the appetite-suppressing compound in the plant and was known to be P57 which was patented last 1996 under Phytopharm.
Hoodia for the People
There has never been a consecutive study on humans that the hoodia plant proves to be an appetite-suppressant. It has also never been studied that the plant in its pill form is safely effective and demonstrates no side effects for everyone who uses hoodia as their dietary supplement. Because of this, most doctors and medical experts are still skeptical about recommending the hoodia plant to their patients since there is still a lack of study that would support the effectiveness and safety of it.

Q. What is Hoodia?
Hoodia is a succulent plant found in the Kalahari desert of South Africa. Hoodia plants are succulents, not cacti, although they do have a spiny appearance similar to cacti.
Q. There are some other products that claim to contain Hoodia. Are they the same as Phytopharm's product?
Only Phytopharm’s patented Hoodia product is botanically verified to contain pure Hoodia and has quantified levels of the chemical constituents that produce the weight management effects. Importantly, only Phytopharm’s Hoodia product has had extensive safety studies performed and been clinically proven to reduce calorie intake and body fat. The benefit sharing to the CSIR and the San people is only generated by Phytopharm’s patented Hoodia product.
Phytopharm and Unilever have also become aware of many companies that are selling products over the Internet and in some stores claiming to contain Hoodia and causing weight loss. Analysis of these products has demonstrated that the great majority of them contain little or no Hoodia. Phytopharm and Unilever have made contact with the relevant authorities concerning this development and are satisfied with the progress being made in these key discussions.
Q. How has Hoodia been used in the past?
For many centuries the San bushmen of the Kalahari desert have used Hoodia plants as a food.
Q. How did the CSIR's research into Hoodia commence?
Due to the tradition of food use of Hoodia plants, certain species were included in a scientific research project established by the South African statutory council known as CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) to screen a large number of bush foods. As part of the screening process, extracts of plants were made and tested for toxic effects. Surprisingly, it was observed that the Hoodia extracts caused a decrease in appetite and body weight in animals that did not appear to be due to a direct toxic effect of the extract.
Q. Do all Hoodia species reduce appetite?
Only Phytopharm’s Hoodia extract has been proven to decrease calorie intake in human volunteers.
Q. Have the benefits of Hoodia been clinically proven?
In 2001 Phytopharm completed a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study in overweight, but otherwise healthy volunteers using an extract of Hoodia. The large doses of extract caused a statistically significant reduction in the average daily calorie intake. In addition, a statistically significant reduction in body fat content was also observed compared to the placebo group after two weeks.
Q. How long does it take for Hoodia to have an effect?
A clinical trial conducted by Phytopharm demonstrated that repeat dose administration of large doses of Hoodia extract caused a statistically significant decrease in daily calorie intake. By day 15 the calorie intake had decreased by approximately 1000 kcal per day.
Q. Does Hoodia have any side effects?
In the clinical study described above the safety data are consistent with a satisfactory overall safety profile, however further scientific studies are required to establish the safety profile of Hoodia extract. These are currently ongoing at Phytopharm.
Q. Is Hoodia patented?
The CSIR has submitted patents in territories all over the world relating to Hoodia. Phytopharm has an exclusive licence for these patents.
Q. When will the product containing the Hoodia extract be available?
The necessary clinical trials and other studies to ensure the safety of the extract will take a few years before a product will be available.
Q. Who are the San people and how do they and South Africa benefit from sales of Hoodia?
The CSIR have entered a benefit sharing agreement with an organisation representing the San people, to ensure that any financial benefit flowing from the commercialisation of the patented Hoodia extract is shared with people whose traditional knowledge first led to the investigation of the plant. In addition, Phytopharm has worked closely with the CSIR and appreciated the importance of the continuing development to South Africa. To this end, Phytopharm has collaborated with the CSIR and opened a clinical supplies unit and a botanical supplies unit in South Africa.
Q. What does the inclusion of Hoodia in Appendix II of CITES mean?
CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) is an international agreement between governments to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. There are 166 Parties (States bound by the Convention). Species covered by CITES are listed in three appendices. Appendix II includes species not necessarily threatened with extinction, but for which trade must be controlled in order to avoid utilisation incompatible with their survival. Following a review at the Conference of Parties in Bangkok (October 2004) it was decided to include Hoodia onto Appendix II of CITES. This will help ensure that all harvest operations and trade of Hoodia plant material are controlled at an international level in order to conserve indigenous plant populations within the range states (South Africa, Namibia and Botswana).
Q. Hoodia is rare, is the source sustainable?
Hoodia is very rare and is protected by national conservation laws in South Africa and Namibia. It can only be collected or grown with a permit. Wild stocks are also extremely limited so Phytopharm has established plantations over the past 5 years to grow sustainable quantities of Hoodia exclusively for Phytopharm’s product. There is a continuing development programme by Phytopharm to ensure sustainable supplies for Phytopharm’s product in the future.
Hoodia gordonii is a succulent plant from Africa and has been touted as a weight loss product. Our Alternative Medicine guide, Cathy Wong, ND, has a great article about hoodia. Basically there is a substance in hoodia that triggers the hypothalamus to reduce the appetite and the feeling of hunger. There really aren't many studies with hoodia use in humans, however hoodia has been used by San Bushmen of the Kalahari desert for many years to ward off hunger pangs.
Hoodia appears to be safe and can be found in over the counter weight loss products. Taking the edge off hunger may help with weight loss, but you still need to make healthy food choices. That means lower calorie, high nutrient foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
Thousands of diet pill shipments ordered by Canadians are arriving at Canada's borders and being detained by federal wildlife and customs officials because they contain an endangered African plant species called hoodia.
Hoodia has been featured on Sixty Minutes, in O, The Oprah Magazine and in other media as an effective, safe, natural appetite suppressant. Foreign marketers, based predominantly in the U.S., are advertising to Canadians who place orders, often unaware that the seller is outside Canada.
Since May 2006, these diet pill shipments have been intercepted daily at international mail centres, courier facilities and airports in Montreal, Quebec City, Mississauga, Calgary and Vancouver because importers do not have the proper permits. So far, in excess of 2,000 shipments have been detained. No charges have been laid, but federal Wildlife Officers may charge importers who have not obtained the proper permits.
Hoodia is a cactus-like plant native to Namibia, Botswana and South Africa. It is usually sold in powdered form or in capsules. A bottle of 60 pills usually costs between $30 and $45. Since 2005, the plant has been listed under Appendix II of the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). There is legal trade in hoodia, which is managed by the CITES international permit system which helps ensure that wild populations of plants are not threatened by international trade. In order for a shipment of hoodia specimens, parts, or products to be legally exported from, it must be accompanied by a CITES Appendix-II permit or certificate issued by the CITES Management Authority of the country of export.
To protect this threatened species, Environment Canada is requesting that consumers ensure that before they order hoodia diet pills, that the pills are being imported legally with a proper permit. Consumers who order without proof of a valid CITES permit risk not receiving their purchase. Shipments without a valid CITES export or re-export permit will be detained by Environment Canada wildlife enforcement officers or by Canada Border Services Agency customs officers. Officers are not legally permitted to release products without the proper permit and an importer cannot obtain such a permit after the fact.
Hoodia gordonii cactus is the plant with the new wonder ingredient that curbs one's appetite and helps one to slim. Hoodia gordonii is actually a succulent plant from the Kalahari desert, home of the San People. The San have been using the Hoodia gordonii succulent for centuries to stave off hunger during their long and ardeous hunting trips in the harsh South African wild. Now you too can lose weight with this miracle diet pill.
The discovery of the active ingredient in the Hoodia gordonii plant is proven with clinical research to suppress one's appetite by up to 2000 calories a day. This amazing and all natural and organic ingredient is the result of 30 years of research by the CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) in South Africa. So great is the discovery of this weight-loss ingredient that Pfizer, a large pharmaceutical company, is developing a pill, based on the hoodia gordonii plant bioactive compound, P57. Pfizer hopes that P57 will banish food cravings.
Hoodia gordonii is one of the most sought after succulents due to its medicinal properties. It has been called one of the wonder plants of the twenty first century. Trade in this plant is restricted. See Information document on trade in Hoodia gordonii and other Hoodia species for further details.
Description
Hoodia gordonii is a spiny succulent. In the early stages only one stem is produced but at a later stage the plant starts branching. Mature plants can have as many as 50 individual branches and weigh as much as 30 kg. Plants under ideal conditions can attain a height of 1 m. Flowers are borne on or near the terminal apex (top part of the plant). The flowers are large and have a carrion-like smell (smell similar to rotten meat). In some ways the Hoodia flowers resemble a petunia flower. Flowers vary in colour from pale straw to dark maroon. Flowers are normally borne in August or September. Flowers can reach a diameter of 75 mm. Seed is produced in October and November. The seed capsules resemble small antelope or goat horns hence the Afrikaans common name of bokhorings.
Distribution
Hoodia gordonii has a very wide distribution. It occurs in the northeastern part of the Western Cape, the north and northwestern regions of the Northern Cape and southern Namibia . It is used to extreme heat (above 40°C), but it can survive in relatively low temperatures (–3°C).
The plant appears to have a wide tolerance of growing habitats, found in deep Kalahari sands, on dry stony slopes or flats and under the protection of xerophytic bushes.
Hoodia gordonii can under ideal conditions live for 25 years in cultivation. In the wild they probably don't live much longer than 15 years.
Derivation of name and historical aspects
Hoodia gordonii was discovered by Paterson and Col. R.F. Gordon in December 1778 in the Upington area. Mr Francis Masson, a famous botanist, named this plant Stapelia gordonii with the specific epithet named after Gordon. In 1830 the genus was later transferred by Sweet into the genus Hoodia, which was named in honour of Van Hood, a keen succulent grower.
Ecology
Pollination is done mainly by flies. This unusual pollination biology is referred to as myophily (pollination by flies). Myophily takes place in some of the following genera, Stapelia, Huernia and Ceropegia.
Uses and cultural aspects
Several species of Hoodia are eaten raw. Obviously the spines must first be removed. Hoodia has been known for many years as an appetite suppressant. These appetite suppressant properties have now been developed and Hoodia derivative products are now marketed in many western countries where obesity is becoming a problem.
Growing Hoodia gordonii
If you plan to grow these plants in South Africa, you must contact your local Department of Nature Conservation. See Information document on Trade in Hoodia gordonii and other Hoodia species for contact details.
Propagation is done mainly from seed. Cuttings are not really an option, as the severed ends very rarely form a callus from where roots will eventually form. Seeds are produced in October and November of each year (southern hemisphere). The seed horns must be semi-dry and starting to split down the middle before seed can be collected.
The seeds are light brown in colour, are flat and have a pappus of fluffy hair attached to their one end. This pappus acts as a parachute when the seed pod splits open. The seeds are blown some distance from the parent plant where they will establish themselves. Life for a young Hoodia plant begins under the protection of a nurse plant. A nurse plant is a shrub under which the young plant germinates and grows, protected by its leaves and branches from the suns strong rays.
Use sandy loam with a small amount of very well-rotted, sieved compost. The seeds should not be planted deeper than 0.5 cm. Do not crowd too many seeds into a seed pan, this can lead to damping off when they start germinating. The sowing medium must be well drained. Do not over-water, too much water at a time when the seeds are germinating will ROT them. Only water four times a week under warm conditions, 28°C or above. During the winter months only water once every two weeks. Move to a sunny location.
Sow the seeds in March or April (southern hemisphere). By April of the following year the plants should be strong enough to be planted in a small, 9 cm plastic pot, using a well-drained potting medium.
Hoodia gordonii once established will grow quickly. These plants respond well to organic foodstuffs. In a three years plants can attain a height of at least 250 mm and have up to 10 branches.

HoodiaRush is one of the very few certified Hoodia Gordonii importers and continues to provide people with only pure hoodia gordonii.

Deep inside the African Kalahari desert grows an ugly cactus plant called Hoodia (Asclepiadaceae family). It thrives in high temperatures and takes around 2 years to mature.
According to the British Heart Foundation 17% of men and 21% of women are obese, while 46% of men and 32% of women are overweight. Apart from a small handful of genetically related cases, the vast majority are due to overeating and food addiction. Will Hoodia be the diet wonder drug of the century to lower these numbers dramatically?
First a little information about Hoodia.
Hoodia Gordonii has been used by the South African San tribe for thousands of years. The San used Hoodia when they went on hunting expeditions. Hoodia helped to prolong their hunting trips by suppressing hunger, increasing their energy levels and even improving their libido.
There are various species of Hoodia but the Gordonii variation is the only one that contains the natural appetite suppressant. The Hoodia plant sprouts about 10 tentacles and is the size of a long cucumber. Each tentacle is covered in spikes which need to be carefully peeled. Inside is a slightly unpleasant tasting, fleshy plant. Hoodia pills kills the appetite and attacks obesity, is organic with no synthetic or artificial appetite control agents, has no side effects, contains a miracle molecule that fools the brain into believing you are full and even stops you from thinking about food and eating.
Hoodia is a natural substance that literally takes your appetite away and has a natural feel great aphrodisiac quality. Moreover, aside from using it to stop hunger, provide unperturbed energy and shore up stress, the San also use it to treat diabetes and hypertension. It's even said to cure hangovers and upset stomachs too. Hoodia is a potentially powerful weapon against obesity and the American focus on losing weight.
Some people report that hoodia works for them immediately, suppressing hunger pangs within 20 to 30 minutes after taking the Hoodia weight loss pills. However people typically need up to two weeks of regularly taking hoodia before they begin to notice the effects of hoodia, which include - A reduced interest in food - Feeling full more quickly and a overall feeling of good health.
When Hoodia is combined with a healthy eating plan and exercise, Hoodia can help to bring about tremendous changes in body fat, and can greatly improve a persons health.

How Hoodia Chaser Suppresses the Appetite?
Hoodia fools the brain into thinking it's full when it's not. So, your brain sends the signal that it is full and this cuts your urge to snack on unhealthy food. In fact, Hoodia is more powerful than glucose in telling the brain that you are full. Here is how Phytopharm's Dr Richard Dixey explained how P-57 actually works:
"There is a part of your brain, the hypothalamus. Within that mid-brain there are nerve cells that sense glucose sugar.
When you eat, blood sugar goes up because of the food, these cells start firing and now you are full. What the Hoodia seems to contain is a molecule that is about 10,000 times as active as glucose. It goes to the mid-brain and actually makes those nerve cells fire as if you were full. But you have not eaten. Nor do you want to."
Just a few sprays of HoodiSpray will give you faster, more effective weight loss results than any Hoodia pill can. It will help make you feel full faster because it uses a proprietary technology to extract Maximum Potency from the active compounds of Pure South African Hoodia and then utilizes a special processing technology that allows the active ingredients to be orally dispensed as an Easy-To-Use, Fast-Acting fine mist spray.
These combined state-of-the-art technologies allow you to effortlessly take this easy to use weight loss supplement anywhere, any time because you use it like a breath freshener. Just two quick sprays of HoodiSpray™ before meals or snacks and losing weight will never be easier!

How Hoodia Works
Hoodia tricks the brain into thinking that you are full. It contains a molecule that is 10,000 times as active as glucose. It goes to the mid-brain and makes those nerve cells feel as if you are full. The hypothalamus receives this signal as an indication that enough food has been consumed and this in turn stunts the appetite. It tricks the brain into thinking you've eatenl. After you Spray, you're simply NOT AS HUNGRY! You'll still eat – but you'll EAT LESS! Read more about how hoodia works
Hoodia Research
Scientists at the South African Center for Scientific and Industrial Research were the first to successfully prove that Hoodia contains a molecule that suppresses the appetite. Later, a human clinical trial was conducted by scientists in Leicester England. A group of morbidly obese men and women participated. Half the group was given Hoodia and half given a placebo. At the end of 15 days, the group on Hoodia had reduced their food intake by 1000 calories a day. Given the average daily diet is around 2200 calories, this was a stunning success.

It is difficult to trace out exactly since when the tribes of the Kalahari Desert in South Africa have been using the stem of the Hoodia Gordonii plant to ward off their hunger. Hoodia grows wild in Africa. A Dutch anthropologist was the first European to describe the plant. In 1937, he was studying the habits of nomadic hunters and noted that they often ate the plant when food and water were scarce. He mentioned that the Hoodia Gordonii plant was not particularly tasty, but it had the desirable effect of reducing appetite and thirst and thereby can be produced an effective drug to reduce weight.
The Secret Is Unfolded!
It was not until 1963 that an organized study of Hoodia Gordonii was performed. Scientists at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in South Africa reported that laboratory animals which were fed on the Hoodia plant lost weight. Sometime in the 1990’s the scientists in South Africa were able to attract the interest of a British pharmaceutical company, Phytopharm. Eventually, through a joint effort, they were able to isolate and identify the active molecule in Hoodia Gordonii and named it ‘p57’. In 1995, Phytopharm licensed and patented ‘p57’. Phytopharm reportedly spent more than $20 million dollars researching the effects of the ‘p57’ molecule found in the Hoodia Gordonii plant before they sub-licensed the rights to Pfizer in 1998. One of the major production problems is the limited availability of Hoodia Gordonii. The Gordonii plant requires extremely high temperatures to flourish and it takes four to five years to mature. Phytopharm is now working with Uni-lever and has established Hoodia Gordonii plantations in South Africa.
Experts make the following recommendations for overweight people interested in trying Gordonii supplements. The length of time to experience the appetite suppressing effects may occur quickly, even following the first dose, but some people do not notice a significant difference until after taking the supplement for several weeks. In addition, the recommended dosage may need to be adjusted up or down depending on the individual. There are no adverse side effects associated with Hoodia Gordonii.

Like many subjects relating to the human body, the question; how does hoodia work is still being studied. Many scientists agree that it does work as an appetite suppressant and on-going clinical trials are mostly concerned with issues concerning dosages, drug interactions and other factors affecting positive results. The connection between a portion of the brain called the hypothalamus, hoodia gordonii and appetite was made by scientists at Brown University. The San of southern Africa knew nothing about the affect that hoodia had on the brain. They only knew that it alleviated their hunger and thirst.
Hoodia diet pill kills the appetite and attacks obesity, is organic with no synthetic or artificial appetite control agents, has no known side effects, contains a miracle molecule (up to 100,000 times more powerful than glucose) that fools the brain into believing you are full, and even stops you from thinking about food. Well, for one there is no reason to doubt the sincerity of the wonderfully lean and fit Bushmen of the Kalahari. What they say about the capability of Hoodia is clearly factual. Their long history involving the use of Hoodia spanning thousands years and many generations not only speaks volumes but serves as illustrious proof of the real benefits of Hoodia. Then, as luck would have it, Hoodia is able to go to the heart of obesity crises. Because by comparison to the small handful of genetically related cases, the vast majority are due to overeating and food addiction. Plus, to the delight of the skeptics pure Hoodia has shown to be a natural remedy capable of controlling caloric intake better than the dangerous artificial drugs of the past.
The vast majority of herbalists and naturopaths prefer liquid extracts over pills because of increased biochemical potency and results. Liquid extracts are pre-extracted and are more absorbable than pills as you do not need to digest them. Woody roots and plant parts such as hoodia are hard to digest in pill form, especially for those who already have a hard time digesting food (and food is a lot easier to digest than wood). Since liquid extract absorbs almost immediately, one gets faster results than pills. This is especially important as an appetite suppressant such as hoodia because the faster you can lesson food cravings when you are hungry, the better the results of your weight loss objectives.
Though hoodia was available in some specialty stores, Hoodia Gordonii was relatively unknown until major drug companies rediscovered unique properties. Hoodia is gaining the reputation as the dietary supplement of all time for weight management and many people are reporting excellent success when consuming this product along with a sensible diet and regular exercise. We are happy to be able to offer you Authentic South African Hoodia Gordonii powder that we buy direct from one of the top Hoodia Gordonii farmers in South Africa.
Some of the most common side effects experienced by weight loss surgery patients include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, excessive sweating, increased gas, and dizziness. As you can see, weight loss surgery carries some huge benefits along with some very significant risks. If you are severely obese, it is definitely an option for reducing your body weight and improving - or even eliminating - many of your obesity-related health conditions. Just understand the risk and be prepared to make some relatively extensive lifestyle changes after the procedure. If you are not severely obese you should definitely consider diet and exercise options before you think about weight loss surgery.
Hoodia Gordonii Safety it is a cactus like plant mainly found in the high deserts of the Kalahari Desert in South Africa. There are many species of Hoodia plants available, but only the Hoodia Gordonii contains all natural appetite suppressants that can promote weight loss. Hoodia Gordonii is a pure, safe and natural diet pill supplement that suppresses your appetite due to which you don’t feel starved. There are many benefits of using Hoodia Gordonii, firstly it gives you a great feeling of good health as well as lot of energy without sticking to any kind of diets while using Hoodia and all this possible without any harmful side effects of Hoodia products.
It's taken years for overweight Americans to discover what the South African bush people knew innately -- or so the story goes. For eons, the bush people have nibbled a native succulent plant called Hoodia gordonii -- and stayed slim. No fretting (apparently) about fitting into "skinny jeans" or advancing a belt notch.
Now, the plant native to the Kalahari Desert is being imported in heaps to slim down hefty Americans. Media reports and word-of-mouth is fueling this latest weight loss craze, not to mention thousands of email spams.
Widely sold over the Internet and in health food and discount stores, Hoodia gordonii is typically offered in capsules or tablets, but is also available in milk chocolate chews. A 30-day supply often costs $35 and up.
Despite booming sales -- one manufacturer claims its sales alone reached $20 million in the past year -- the unanswered question is: Where's the proof this stuff works?
Hoodia -- a succulent, not a cactus, as it's often erroneously described -- has lots of hoopla, but little science, at least little published science, as even advocates admit. Experts familiar with it say hoodia tricks your brain into thinking you're full. But they acknowledge that published, scientific studies proving hoodia works long-term are sparse.
Because it is sold as a dietary supplement, hoodia escapes the level of scrutiny the FDA gives prescription drugs and medications sold over the counter.
The Science
Hoodia does have some evidence to back it up, says Mark Blumenthal, founder and executive director of the American Botanical Council, a nonprofit research organization in Austin, Texas. He cites one laboratory study but says the evidence is not conclusive.
"We can only say the evidence available to us right now, which is considered inadequate, suggests that there is some type of appetite-suppressing mechanism in some of the naturally occurring chemicals in hoodia," Blumenthal says. He adds that his organization has not received any consumer reports of safety problems with hoodia use.
The laboratory evidence Blumenthal refers to was produced by David MacLean, MD, an adjunct associate professor at Brown University in Providence, R.I., and a former researcher at the pharmaceutical giant, Pfizer. In a report published in the Sept. 10, 2004, issue of Brain Research, MacLean reported that a molecule in hoodia, called P57, likely has an effect on the brain's hypothalamus, which helps regulate appetite. His study was done in animals.
In an email response to WebMD, MacLean says a cousin of hoodia's P57 molecule may eventually prove to be the better answer. "A chemical within that class of molecules has real potential to reduce appetite," he says. "I'm less confident regarding the hoodia molecule itself for reasons relating to its metabolism [absorption and breakdown] in humans."
About the time MacLean's article was published, Richard M. Goldfarb, MD, a doctor in Morrisville, Pa., conducted a study of Hoodia gordonii on people and found it effective. His study was small, just seven people, says Goldfarb, medical director of Bucks County Clinical Research, an organization that conducts studies for pharmaceutical and other companies.
Why Hoodia XR is better than other Hoodia products:
HoodiaXR is made from 100% pure Hoodia Gordonii powder wrapped in a unique extended release tablet. Normal hoodia gordonii diet pills contain only 200-400 mg of hoodia in a gelatin capsule. This is a very cheap way to package hoodia, but when swallowed this small amount of hoodia is released at one time. This quick release causes a spike of the p57 molecule in your system which is metabolized rapidly. After your first dose of normal hoodia diet pills, there is a period when you begin to feel hungry, however it is not time for your next dose. This is a major problem with other brands of hoodia. HoodiaXR overcomes this problem by using the extended release system. This allows for 1000mg of pure hoodia to slowly enter your system over hours instead of only 200-400mg in just 20 minutes. The extended release system makes you consistently feel full throughout the day, and allows you to dramatically decrease your appetite with just 3 easy pills. HoodiaXR allows you to avoid taking the 9-12 pills that would be required for the proper levels of hoodia to remain in your system all day.
Scientists believe that the reason for it's appetite suppressing effects is a molecule called "P 57". Normally when you eat, the glucose in your body rises and eventually signals to your brain (the hypothalamus) that you are full.
It is believed that the P 57 molecule mimics the effect that glucose has on your brain, telling the hypothalamus (which is responsible for hunger and fullness feelings) that you feel full. Consequently you have no desire to eat.
In fact, it is reported that P57 is actually 10,000 times stronger than glucose at signalling your hypothalamus to stop eating.
One of the first studies of Hoodia Gordonii was done in the UK on obese patients. Half of the volunteers were given Hoodia, the other half a placebo. The subjects were allowed to do nothing but read, watch television and eat (with open access to food).
After 15 days, it was found that those taking Hoodia had reduced their calorie intake by 1000 calories a day. Despite having unlimited access to food, the Hoodia subjects lost weight without feeling hungry.
So we know that Hoodia works at suppressing the appetite and helping people lose weight naturally.
Hoodia - The Truth, The Dangers, and a New Hope for Dieters.
Is Hoodia safe and effective? And does it have any relationship to new clincally proven weight loss products such as Proactol?
Hoodia is a member of the cactus plant family and is found in southern regions of Africa. Over the last few years, Hoodia has exploded on to the weight loss market and has become extremely popular as a dieting supplement. The net is saturated with diet pill review sites promoting this pill. Much of the popularity of Hoodia is based on its use by San Bushmen to ward off hunger while on long hunting trips.
Despite the over the top claims marketing companies make about Hoodia, especially over the internet, there is no evidence to suggest that Hoodia is safe or effective for people who need to lose weight. Tricking the brain into thinking there is enough blood sugar in the body is dangerous and has serious implications for Diabetes. There are also possible implications for the liver and kidneys, potentially, damage can be caused. No studies have been undertaken on its effect on other medications either.
Another problem with Hoodia is questions over it's purity. Only Hoodia Gordoni has the effective ingredient p57, and this plant is an endangered species. If all the Hoodia products that are being touted over the net were real, then southern Africa would be covered in this cactus. The truth is, it is not, so many of the products sold as Hoodia are probably not the genuine article.
What are the alternatives?
Diet pills are attractive to those of us who struggle to keep to a healthy weight. When choosing a diet pill, clinically proven results and safety are key. You may have heard of a product meeting safety and standards of effectiveness that has hit the market recently called Proactol. Proactol is a clinically proven fat binding pill that reduces the fat from the food we eat by around 28%, amog other weight loss benefits. User feedback has been very positive and backs up the claims of this supplement being highly effective in speeding up long term weight loss. Proactol is clinically proven to:
- Reduce Fat intake by 28%
- Reduce Calorie Intake
- Stops food cravings
- Effective at promoting long term weight loss.
Proactol is doctor endorsed, and classified as a medical device. It does not use any type of drug to trick the body, its patented fibre complex binds fat from the food we eat into a viscous solution that is naturally expelled from the body, no known side effects have been reported.
Hoodia weight loss pills are some of the most popular diet pills sold today, but do hoodia and weight loss go hand-in-hand? Despite the marketing hype and the promise by so many supplement companies that you're guaranteed results, hoodia diet pills may not work as advertised.
First, let's have a quick primer on what is hoodia and then we'll discuss its role with weight loss. While commonly referred to as the hoodia cactus, it is technically a succulent. There are 13 varieties of the hoodia plant but only the hoodia gordonii variety has appetite suppressant qualities.
The hoodia gordonii plant is found in the Kalahari Desert of South Africa. The San tribe, or also known as the Bushmen, have been eating the hoodia plant for centuries to stave off hunger during long hunting trips. They cut off a small piece of the plant, peel it, and then eat it raw. A small piece will suppress their appetite for hours.
Seeing the opportunity to capitalize on the obesity epidemic, companies began making hoodia diet pills and products that contain hoodia gordonii. The idea behind these products is obvious. By taking hoodia weight loss pills your appetite will be suppressed so you'll eat less. The end result is that you'll lose weight.
In theory that sounds wonderful, but it doesn't always work that way. That is why hoodia and weight loss isn't necessarily synonymous. For starters, not all hoodia weight loss pills are created equal. While there are a few honest companies who are producing and selling authentic hoodia gordonii diet pills, the majority are selling products with very little of it - if any at all. Without authentic hoodia gordonii, these products are worthless. You might as well flush your money down the toilet.
The reason there are so many scams out there is because hoodia gordonii is very scarce. It is only grown in South Africa and there are tight restrictions on the exportation of the plant. On the other hand, the demand for it is very high. This has led to a rapid increase in the price of hoodia gordonii. Not too long ago, a kilo was under $20. Today, a kilo sells for over $250. In an effort to maximize their profits, some unscrupulous companies knowingly dilute their products with other ingredients and fillers, or use a different variety of hoodia all together.
Other companies may not even know they're selling fakes. Brokers are getting in on the action as well. They'll dilute their own stock of hoodia gordonii or use a different variety of hoodia and then trick companies into believing they are buying the real thing for use in their supplements and products. Since hoodia supplements are unregulated, companies and consumers alike need to be aware of what they're buying. So if you've tried hoodia weight loss pills in the past and they didn't work, there is a good chance you weren't getting authentic hoodia gordonii.
The other reason hoodia and weight loss don't always go hand-in-hand is because some people aren't getting enough hoodia gordonii to produce the appetite suppressing effects. Experts say that it could take as much as 3 grams or more per day of it to suppress appetite. The largest pill available that contains 100% authentic hoodia gordonii is only 750mg. You'd have to take 4 or more pills per day to reach that amount. If you were to take pills with less than that (which most do), then you could be looking at taking 8 or more pills per day!
Another reason hoodia and weight loss may not be synonymous is because dieters have unrealistic expectations of what hoodia weight loss pills can do. They make the mistake of believing that all they have to do is pop some pills and the weight will disappear. If that were true, we wouldn't be facing an obesity epidemic today. The reality is, hoodia diet pills only addresses one small piece of the weight loss puzzle - your appetite.
Hoodia supplements don't change a bad diet, nor do they stop you from overeating. If you're eating Big Macs and french fries all the time, or if you find yourself eating even when you're not hungry, hoodia weight loss pills will do absolutely nothing for you. If this describes you, then save your money and instead invest it on a more comprehensive weight loss program that can address your diet and eating issues.
If you generally have a good diet and aren't prone to overeating, then hoodia diet pills can play an effective role in helping you achieve your weight loss goals. Just don't fall into the trap that a pill is the sole answer to weight loss. You still need to put in some effort.
Also keep in mind that controlling your appetite and maintaining a healthy diet can only achieve so much. If you want optimum weight loss results, you really need to exercise on a regular basis as well.
Hoodia: Weight loss wonder or voodoo doodoo?
Thanks to everyone who has written in to scambuster@healthtalk.com. The response has been tremendous, and I’ll try to answer as many questions as I can. What’s the number one scambuster question about? Hoodia - by a long shot. Does hoodia work? Is hoodia safe? What is hoodia? Lots and lots of people want to know about hoodia!
And so do I! That’s just the problem. There’s precious little science on the subject of hoodia. Yes, there’s lots of hype, hoopla and hyperbole; just not much science.
Here’s what we do know. Hoodia gordonii is a plant, a succulent native to South Africa that’s been known to the region’s indigenous people for thousands of years. Apparently, they’ve learned to chew the plant to reduce impulses to eat and to drink. Appetite suppression is something that might come in handy living in the Kalahari desert, but I doubt they have much of a problem with obesity.
Now jump cut to Lesley Stahl, CBS News 60 Minutes’ correspondent, who in 2004 traveled to South Africa, tried some hoodia and created a major marketing opportunity for supplement purveyors. According to 60 Minutes, “Stahl says she had no after effects – no funny taste in her mouth, no queasy stomach, and no racing heart. She also wasn’t hungry all day, even when she would normally have a pang around mealtime. And, she also had no desire to eat or drink the entire day. ‘I’d have to say it did work,’ says Stahl.” Does that convince you? Because that, in addition to other individual testimonials, is about all we have to go on. You see, the problem is that there simply aren’t any scientific studies showing that hoodia works as an appetite curber or a weight loss agent.
If anyone knows of any serious clinical research on hoodia in humans, please post that information in the comments section. Don’t hold your breath, there isn’t any. Yes, there’s some research in rats showing that huge doses of hoodia extract injected directly into the rodent’s brain appears to suppress their appetite, and yes, there’s an unpublished study from a Pennsylvania laboratory that supposedly showed some weight loss in a few people, but what I’m talking about is serious clinical research, with a control group not receiving hoodia, that’s published in a reputable scientific journal available for everyone to read. Here’s another hint: there isn’t any.
It is abundantly clear that we simply do not know if hoodia works as an appetite suppressant. Moreover, we don’t have any idea if it is safe. We don’t know what the appropriate dose might be and we have no idea how it might interact with other supplements, or over-the-counter or prescription medications.
But don’t take my word for it. Here’s what the Mayo Clinic has to say: “There is no conclusive evidence that hoodia is an effective appetite suppressant. One small study – sponsored by a supplement manufacturer – found that hoodia may affect the part of the brain that controls hunger. But much more research is needed to establish the potential effectiveness and long-term safety of hoodia.”
The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) said: “There is no reliable scientific evidence to support hoodia’s use. No studies of the herb in people have been published. Hoodia’s safety is unknown. Its potential risks, side effects and interactions with medicines and other supplements have not been studied. The quality of hoodia products varies widely. News reports suggest that some products sold as hoodia do not contain any hoodia.”
Take a good look at those last two lines. Not only don’t we know if this stuff works or if it’s safe, but you’ve got no way to know if you’re even buying what you think you’re buying!
And here’s Dr. Andrew Weil, a noted practitioner of alternative medicine: “We may learn someday that Hoodia does promote weight loss by effectively suppressing appetite, but until we do, I wouldn’t waste money on products that haven’t been proven to work and may not contain any Hoodia at all.”
Last, while I can’t tell you exactly what Consumer Reports magazine said in their March 2006 issue on page 49 about hoodia, I think it’s ok for me to say that their assessment was nearly identical to the three others above.
So what do I call something that has mega-marketing behind it but no evidence of either safety or efficacy and major questions about the actual product content? Oh yes, I know: A HUGE SCAM!
Product description: The Kava Herbal diet pill is a product based on Kava Kava herbs. Kava, or Piper Methysticum, is a member of the pepper family, which grows across the South Pacific. Islanders use the roots to make a milky, mild narcotic drink, which numbs the mouth and acts as a relaxant. In the West, alternative health shops market this product as a herbal supplement to promote sleep, relieve stress and ease pain. Animal studies show that kava lactones alter neuronal excitation through direct interactions with voltage-dependent ion channels. This causes Kava?s muscle relaxant, anaesthetic, anxiolytic and anticonvulsive properties. Several isolated cases of psychotic and severe diatomic reactions following the use of Kava suggest that Kava also has psychoactive properties. However, there is no conclusive evidence that kava interferes with normal cognitive processes. Products based on Kava Kava have caused severe liver damage to more than 100 patients worldwide, and several of these cases have been fatal. Canada and other countries banned Kava-Kava in 2002. The United States' Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has published numerous warnings concerning this substance.
Side effects: Kava Kava has caused very severe side effects like hypertention, reduced protein levels, blood cell abnormalities, muscle weakness, shortness of breath, dizziness, visual impairment and severe liver damage. Several patients who used kava products had liver failure and needed subsequent liver transplantation.
Dear Tea and Bowels,
Without knowing the ingredients that are in your friend's tea, it is hard to predict the long term effects of drinking it regularly. However, we can talk in generalities: the products senna, aloe, rhubarb root, buckthorn and castor oil have been used for centuries to help with constipation and bowel movements. These items are commonly found in many so-called "diet teas." Drinking or eating an excess of products that contain these ingredients may lead to loose, watery stools, as well as more serious side effects like vomiting, nausea, persistent diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and even fainting and dehydration.
Some dieters believe that having diarrhea (a result of the laxative) means fewer calories are being absorbed by the body, but this is not the case. Calorie absorption occurs in the small intestine, the area of the body's digestive tract that comes before the colon. Laxatives (herbal or otherwise) tend to work on the colon, and would therefore have very little to no effect reducing how many calories one is taking in. One danger of overusing laxatives is that the colon can become dependent on them in order to have a successful bowel movement, known as a lax colon. In some extreme cases, the colon shuts down completely and must be removed. Other side effects of long-term use include electrolyte disorders, chronic pain, and even constipation.
The laxative effect of these teas may be marketed as "natural bowel cleansers" on the tea's package. One may experience temporary weight loss when drinking these teas, because the teas rid the body of excess water. This weight loss will be reversed once s/he drinks something.
In addition to the products listed above, bulk-producing agents, such as methylcellulose, psyllium, and agar are often added to diet products because they are supposed to produce a sense of fullness in the gastrointestinal tract, thus suppressing appetite. These agents swell when mixed with water and are much more effective as laxatives than as appetite suppresants. Glucomannan, a bulk-producing starch derived from konjac tubers, is often touted by health food enthusiasts as a "natural" weight loss method. There is no evidence that glucomannan or any other bulk producer reduces appetite or produces weight loss.
Some herbal diet teas claim to work by suppressing the appetite while simultaneously increasing metabolism. These teas are most commonly marked as the naturally caffeinated black or green teas, as well as Guarana, Kola Nut and Ma Huang. There is still very little evidence to prove that caffeine can boost one's metabolism, although it may increase energy levels in some people. These teas have shown to increase anxiety, restlessness, insomnia and headaches.
Your friend may be able to lose weight by drinking tea if she is substituting regular tea in place of high-calorie beverages such as sodas or juices. In this scenario she could be losing weight because of a reduction in her daily caloric intake, rather than a laxative or appetite suppressing effect from the tea. If she is looking for other ways to lose weight, you may want to suggest that she visit a nutritionist or other health care professional for advice on how to do so safely. If she's a Columbia student, she can log into Open Communicator or call x4-2284 to book an appointment with a health care provider or nutritionist.
Good luck giving your friend the skinny on dieter's tea!
